Something To Live For

Looking back over my life, this statement dropped into my spirit, “Something to live for.”  Boy, it took me back to my late twenties when life had absolutely no meaning for me. My teen years were spent wondering what was beyond the heavens. There must be more to life than what I was experiencing.

Once I had my own child, once I experienced marriage, life’s meaning still eluded me. Once I started working, having another child, and moved away from my hometown, things got worse. Searching for meaning anywhere and everywhere became my life. Work, drugs, sex, alcohol, and relationships left me empty, life was not worth living. So, I went about life aimlessly and miserable, looking in all the wrong places.

What is the meaning of life? I read somewhere, “Life has no meaning. Each of us have meaning, and we bring it to life.”  Wow! When I was younger, I did not have meaning or so I thought. No one told me that my life had meaning or that my life meant more than taking care of my seven siblings. Years of my life were wasted, thinking that life was not worth living. Then I was drawn into a world that I knew nothing about. A friend encouraged me to go to church. I resisted that idea for quite a while, then finally gave in, I started attending church and listening to the teaching of the word of God.  Life begins with a relationship with Jesus Christ. As I sat under the teaching from week to week in church, and in bible study, God eventually called my name, He called me into His kingdom. Matthew 22:14, “Many are called, but few are chosen.”

I started feeling different on the inside, I developed a thirst and hunger for more of God and His word.  John 8:12, “Jesus spoke to them (me) saying, I am the light of the world, whoever follows me will not walk in darkness but will have the light of life.”  I wanted that!  Psalm 18:12 ESV, “for it is you Lord who lights my lamp; the Lord my God lightens my darkness.”  This is my testimony, “He called me out of darkness into His marvelous light.”

Life for me has never been the same. I want more of God and His word.  So, I found “something to live for,” I found a life worth living, I found a love that is amazing, I found a new life in Christ Jesus. It’s best that I don’t take the credit for having “something to live for”, all of these things found me and gave me hope for a better life.
